“Nanook of the North” is one of the most influential documentaries ever made and one of its most debated. Filmed in the Canadian Arctic in 1922, it follows the daily life of an Inuk hunter and his family, but many scenes were carefully staged or recreated for the camera. A landmark in film history, the documentary also reflects the colonial gaze of its time, raising enduring questions about authenticity, representation, and who gets to tell whose story.

„Nanook of the North“ gilt als Meilenstein der Dokumentarfilmgeschichte und zählt zugleich zu ihren umstrittensten Werken. Der 1922 entstandene Film begleitet das Leben eines Inuk-Jägers und seiner Familie in der kanadischen Arktis. Viele Szenen wurden jedoch eigens für die Kamera inszeniert oder nachgestellt. So erzählt der Film nicht nur von den Inuit, sondern auch davon, wie Dokumentarfilm entstand und welche Fragen nach Authentizität und Inszenierung bis heute aktuell sind.
